I believe that Jennifer is right in wanting to evaluate the employees formally. By doing so you are communicating with your employees and giving them a clear ground to stand on.

Formal evaluations will allow the employer the opportunity to gather information on the development of a said individual and offers the opportunity to give advice for improvement or praise for achievement. The formal evaluations also give the employee a chance to see if they are meeting expectations or not.It gives them insight on what they are doing right and what can be done to continually improve within the given environment. (Dessler, 2008) There are various types of performance feedback that can be used by employers to help their employees understand how they are performing and what can be improved. Here are a few examples: Management By Objectives (MBO): described as, "Setting specific measurable objectives with each employee and then periodically reviewing the progress made.Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scale (BARS) : described as," A redetermined percentages of rates are placed in various performance categories.

" 360 Degree Feedback : "described as, A system or process in which employees receive confidential, anonymous feedback from the people who work around them. This usually includes the employee's manager, peers, and customer base. I feel that this would be the most effective for the web designer considering that most of the work that is done is done either by one or a few people. There are designers for large companies and in that case the self appraisal method and the 360 degree feedback method combined would be a good idea to implement.
