Lab Safety Symbols

*Always wash hands after you handle the animals *Animals must be cared for correctly. *If you are allergic to any animal, do not handle them *If you are injured in any way, tell the teacher

* Be sure to dispose of item in a red biohazard bag. *Always sanitize work space. *Always wash hands after lab activities or handling of the animals.

*Immediately tell teacher about any spills *Goggles should be worn at all times *Protective clothing should be worn at all times * Avoid getting acid or other corrosive chemical on skin, clothing, or in eyes. * Do not inhale vapors.

*Wear a laboratory apron or coat to protect your skin and clothing from damage.

* Symbol may show just a trash can. *Ask teacher how to properly dispose of waste or chemicals.

*Wear protective mitts to prevent burns. * Extreme temperature can be cold or hot.

*Always check chord; be sure it is untangled and cannot trip anyone. *Keep away from water. Be sure equipment and your hands are not wet. *Always unplug after completing an activity.

*Always wear goggles to protect eyes in an activity involving chemicals, flames or heating, or glassware.

* Work in a ventilated area, if possible. *If you need to smell an odor, waft. Do not inhale vapors directly.

*Wear gloves to protect skin from contamination. * Keep hands away from face. * Dispose of the floves according to teacher's instructions.

*Flammable material will be in use. * Make sure there are no flames, sparks, or other heat source present.

* Symbol may be scissors. * Scissors, scalpels, knives, pins, and tacks can cut skin. * Always direct a sharp edge or point away from yourself and others.

*Poisonous *Wear protective clothing and goggles *Keep away from eyes and mouth. Wash hands immediately after using. *Notify teacher immediately of any accidents

* Notify teacher immediately. *Do not touch broken class.

* Do not touch hot objects with your bare hands. * Use mitts, tongs, or a clamp to pick up hot items.

* Before you work with flames, tie back loose hair and clothing. * Follow all instructions from your teacher.

* Handle plants only as directed by teacher. * If you are allergic to certain plants, tell your teacher. * Avoid touching harmful plants, such as poison ivy. * Wash your hands when finished the activity.
