JACKSON & DEMOCRATS VS WHIGS -DEMOCRATS DOMINATED included westerners southerners new immigrants, settled in America. DOMINATED -WHIGS, included industrialists and southern planters

THE 2 REPUBLICAN ERAS -Main issue=slavery. Main ELECTION issue= eceonomy. -Republican dominated and won both elections

Proved to be realigning election only formed 6 years before in 1854. Became majority with victory on the Lincoln Hamlin Ticket.

NEW DEAL COALITION -Forged by democrats dominated 1930-1960 -Basic elements= urban working class, ethnic groups, Catholics and Jews, poor southerners, blacks, intellectuals.

SOUTHERN REALIGNMENT/ERA OF DIVIDED PARTY GOVERNMENT

77 of 116 House seats and 6 of 22 senate seats were from GOP.

70 of 131 house seats and 15 of 22 senate seats were from GOP

One party controls White House and other party controls one or both houses of congress. -Both houses of congress and presidency have been controlled by state senate party for 14 of 44 years from 1969-2012

People separating from parties which means smaller party identification, more and more people disagree with platforms.
