To pay the mortgage for the two hundred acres Grandpa bought in 1918
(Chapter 1) After reviewing what Papa says about the land on pages 7 to 8, summarize why the land is so important to the Logans
Because all of the land belongs to them, and that Cassie's never had to live on anybody's land but theirs. FREEDOM!
(Chapter 1) We meet Jeremy Simms again in this chapter. Why would Jeremy receive welts because he associated with the Logan children?
Because he broke a social law for whites: that whites ignore or downgrade blacks
(Chapter 1) Overall, what are four major things you learn about the book's exposition?
a. That they are in a small, rural town in Mississippi; b. The Jefferson Davis County School discriminates blacks with the position of their flags; c. They are in the Great Depression; d. It is 1933

A) Cassie defends Little Man by showing Miss Crocker the chart, the reason why he got so mad. B) This action shows that Cassie is loyal and just
(Chapter 1) What angers Little Man and Cassie about the books? Use page to support your answer.
On pages 23-24, Little Man and Cassie both saw a racist chart stamped on the inside cover of the books that claimed whit students got new to poor conditioned books and a black student got a very poor one. Also, the chart called blacks 'nigra' which is highly disrespectful
(Chapter 1) What did Miss Crocker think about the books? Why do you think she believes that?
She thinks that Cassie and the others should be super grateful because she never grew up with books
(Chapter 1) What did Mama do to the books?
Mama glued paper over the racist charts on the inside covers of her 7th grade student's books
(Chapter 1) Why does Mama think that no one will ever find out about what she did? Use a quote and page number(s) to support your answer.
On page 30, Mama doubts that no one'll ever find out about what she did because no one (the whites/county) would care enough to go and check on a black school. "Mama laughed and picked up the other book. 'In the first place no one cares enough to come down here, and in the second place if anyone should come, maybe he should see all the things we need - current books for all of our subjects, not just somebody's old throwaways, desks, paper, blackboards, erasers, maps, chalk...' Her voice trailed off as she glued the second book" (30).
(Chapter 3) Why didn't Great Faith Elementary School have school buses? On what page did you find this answer?
On pages 43 and 44, it said the county didn't provide buses for black students. The county provided very little for them.
(Chapter 3) Why do you think Stacey is so keen on seeking revenge against the white kids who ride the school bus?
Because he's so angry at them for forcing him and the other blacks into the slime of the gullies and laughing at them while shouting racist things at them
(Chapter 3) Explain what the Logan Children do on these pages of the book.
They watched behind a bush as the bus careened into the puddle and laughed silently
(Chapter 3) What are the results of their actions? Describe what happens to the school bus and the children who ride the bus.
The bus broke, the white children had to walk home and will have to walk to school the next morning, too. Most of them tried to jump the lake and gullies, but fell in and got sopping wet
(Chapter 3) At the end of this section, what exactly does Cassie have to say about revenge? Use the direct quote and say on what page you found it.
"Oh, how sweet was well-maneuvered revenge!" (56)
(Chapter 3) T.J's father, Mr.Avery, comes to the Logan's to warn them about the "night men". Why does Mr.Avery think that the night men are coming? What does he mean? Use the direct quote from the book and cite the page number.
"'All's I can tell ya, Miz Caroline, is what Fannie heard when she was leavin' the Grangers' this evenin'. She'd just finished cleanin' up the supper dishes when Mr.Granger come home with Mr.Grimes - ya know, that white school's bus driver - and two other mens...'" (61-62) The night men are obviously dangerous, and probably lurk around at night to hurt/kill blacks
(Chapter 3) According to this section, who are two of the white men who plan on "riding?"
Mr.Granger and Mr.Grimes
(Chapter 3) Why do you think these white men are upset?
Maybe they inferred that someone'd made the lake to break the bus and immediately put the blame on blacks
(Chapter 3) What do you think these white men are trying to achieve?
Finding out the culprit(s) who created the lake and probably killing him/her/them
(Chapter 3) How do Big Ma and Mr.Morrison react to this news? What do they do?
They both got their guns and maybe went out "patrolling"
