You will learn the | |fundamentals of communication and how to use those to enhance your lives. SPC 1017 combines both the theory and practice of communication. This means that we| |will cover the theoretic principles while giving you the opportunity to put these principles into practice. You must | |arrive on time, no headphones, no cell phones, no notes/textbook/partner, and no bathroom breaks in the middle of taking your test. | | | |Group Presentation: You and your partners will present a 25-30-minute speech on chapters from the textbook that will be chosen for you. Your presentation | |must be delivered extemporaneously and in front of an audience. Your outline for the speech must be submitted in its entirety on the day it is due. You have | |the option to use technology such as PowerPoint to assist you with your presentation.

You will be graded on creativity and clarity of concepts, so use | |examples and other methods to help the audience better understand concepts from the chapters. Arrive on time and be ready to present at the beginning of | |class. | | | |Informative Speech: You will present a 5-10 minute original speech on a topic, which provides information to your audience. In other words, inform the class | |about an interesting topic you researched on. You need to have at least 3 different credible sources and they need to be listed as a reference page. Try | |looking at usual topics in an unusual way. Your informative speech must be delivered extemporaneously and in front of an audience.

Your outline, shown on | |page 173, for the speech must be submitted at the beginning of class in its entirety (including references). It must be typed and handed in on the day it is | |due (hardcopy). Also, at the end of your speech ask the audience if they have any questions. There is little interaction between the audience and speaker | |during the speech. No technology will be used to assist you during your oral speech (PowerPoint, overhead, TV, computer…). | | | |Persuasive Speech: You will present 6-11 minute original speech on a socially significant topic that advocates a belief, attitude, or behavior. Choose a | |topic on which there are a variety of viewpoints and take a position.

You need to have at least 5 different credible sources and they need to be listed as a | |reference page. Your persuasive speech must be delivered extemporaneously and in front of an audience. " This movie applies perception, language, relationships, culture, and more. For those who have seen it before | |please watch it again. You can get the movie from the library or rent it. This movie is a little over 2 hrs long. Hence, make sure you reserve a block of time | |to watch it. | | | |Please take notes while watching this movie because you will have to type a 2-3 page paper with 12-point font, double-spaced, and 1-inch margins. Exclude | |introduction and conclusion in your paper. Just get right to the point.

In addition, cell phone use during class | |session will not be tolerated. | | |Extra Credit: Gender-bending experience: Do a little research on gender bending. For this EC assignment you will dress up like the other gender. In other | |words, if you are a man you will dress like a woman and vice-versa. You will be dressed as this gender for at least the entire class period (you can act the | |part as well if you feel impelled to). I encourage you to dress this part the whole day rather than just the class period, but you don’t have to do so. Your | |gender-bending outfit must be obvious enough for me to give you the full EC points, which is worth 15 pts added to your lowest grade.

On the day you | |gender-bend stay after class to discuss your experience and to receive your points. | |Sample clothing: To dress as a man – ties, baggie clothes, wear a hat on backwards… | |To dress as a woman – dresses, skirts, blouses, make-up, high heels, stockings, | |earrings… | |This EC option needs to be completed before the last week of this class. I will mention the date in class on the first day of class. | | |Academic Misconduct: Academic misconduct covers any academically unethical practice such as plagiarism, cheating on exams, the copying of other people’s | |assignments (including speeches and analysis papers), and inappropriate collaboration on assignments. Be very careful when you are preparing your speeches or | |paper to quote any information you use directly from a source, and to cite the source of any information coming from someone other than yourself when you | |borrow ideas. The best way to avoid plagiarism is to carefully cite your sources. A penalty for academic misconduct will be imposed even in cases of | |inadvertent plagiarism.
